Hi Guys, IIRC, doesn't GE have some kind of 'flyby' feature whereby you can get it to run through a set of recorded locations? Regards, Pat
Hi Again, I just found this demo: Regards, Pat
Hi to All, I can take a try later the week. Also a zoomable map which shows the location incl the photo attached to it would be great. Hans
Hi to All, I tried couple of things with GE. Wanted to upload a *.kmz file with couple of locations. The forum didn't allowed me to upload the format. Need to check. Hans
Hi Hans, These kmz files are usually small enough to email - can you send it to me via pat@whitebeamimages.ie and I'll upload it to my ADrive 'cloud' and then post the download link in this thread. Regards, Pat
Hi All, Hans has kindly sent on his kmz file. Readers can now take it down from the Adrive 'cloud' here (0.874Kbs). You will of course need to have Google Earth installed to view the file  When you click the download link above, you should be offered two choices to either 'Open with...' or 'Save File'. Select the former and a second popup should appear offering program choices to use to open the file - Google Earth (if installed) should be at the top of the list: Once the user clicks 'OK' above, GE should open and Hans's file will be displayed in the 'Temporary Places' folder in the left hand pane like so: Regards, Pat
Hmmmm, forgot to save my last reply I guess. Anyway, I was saying that it would be nice to 'connect the dots' so we can save the sortie as sort of a flightplan (hey, I'm an aviator). Meanwhile I've found a way to do it, using Hans' locations. It would look somthing like the picture below, assuming that the photo numbers are indeed an indication of the order taken, and hence the places visited chronologically.
Hi Navman, All, the Long Lat should be fairly accurate for the pictures identified because I used Google Maps to get the GPS (right mouse click & a pop-up menue comes up, select 'what is there?' and the LL of that place is shown). Plotting a line for a sortie does a good deal of visualizing for the path flown in case we can claim 100% success in resolving all frames. For sortie US7/1730 we are at the beginning of resolving the places presented in the frames. Of course you comment is correct, my (our) indication is the ordering frame number which defines at the moment the order of places visited. Hans
Yes, I was just experimenting to see if it could be done..... Hope we can get complete sorties...... that would be cool !
Hi All, Two more from the list Source for all frames is NCAP Frame 3044 = Frame 3041 Port de Ouistreham; Lower Normandy; France Frame 3040 = Frame 3043 Pont de la Roque I could also find regimental history for this location at Bangor Public Libraries: Combat history of the 6th Armored Division Source: United States Army, "Combat history of the 6th Armored Division" (1946). World War Regimental Histories. Book 41. The 68th Tank Battalion in combat Source: Burns, Robert J. Jr.; Dahl Jr., John S.; and United States Army, "The 68th Tank Battalion in combat" (1946). World War Regimental Histories. Book 4.
Hi to All, not a find but a 'join'. Frame 3004 = 3005. I joined both frames using the ship at the bottom of the frame concatenate both. I can't say anything to the location. Closest are : Frame 3003 = La seulles Rivere Frame 3006 = Vierville Maybe in between. But I think 3004 and 3005 show the same areal view at ther same time. Hans
Hi to All, I think I made some progress. Reeling through the pictures I did concat a few others and I added them to a pano together. I think the overall layout is correct. Ships and vessels are moving so we have to give a little leeway. The pano has the resolution of 1500. However when looking to frame 8007 I think I am correct . Frame 8007 has a resolution of 8000. I am confident that this scenerie takes place at the water side in front of La Seulles Riviere. Tomorrow I will try to link it to the beach. Frames involved in the pano are all from: Source NCAP US7/1730 Frame 3004 Frame 3005 Frame 3006 Frame 4004 Frame 4006 The attached pano shows the pictures concatenated.
Hi to All, today no success to attach the pano showing the scenery of Frame 8007 with a location at any landing site. Only success with a join of 2 frame based on the spot shown in Frame 8002 Frame 3001 and Frame 4001 are from the same spot. For all pictures is the source NCAP
Hi All, the last few days I was looking to the sortie again and I think I could identify few new finds. Associated with these finds I could link it to former frames. The new finds are capturing the small drainage canal La Grande Cirque. GPS 49.418087, -1.20767 I attached the IGN cover view from 1947as ref into the pano. Here are the new pictures in a paint format (no photoshop at the moment but a bigger screen). Frames associated with current pano Frame 4016 Frame 4017 Frame 4018 What I think I see is that the sequence of pitures Frame 3016 Frame 3017 Frame 3018 Frame 3019 Frame 3020 and Frame 4016 Frame 4017 Frame 4018 Frame 4019 are from 2 straight runs to capture the area of the canal 'La Grande Cirque' between the small road 'La Grande Hard' and D67, passing the road 'La Grand Dune' doumented in Frame 3018 and Frame 4019 and heading towards Utah Beach. Hans
Hi Hans, Great work again in a very difficult area. I am not sure if this is of any use to you but someone sent me an unknown frame from an unknown sortie some years back. It covers quite a bit of the marshes behind the beach with Fourcarville at left of lower centre. It appears to be a pre-invasion sortie. Below is a down sized version for reference with its accompanying GE finder chart: I have uploaded the original 1693x1815 pixel TIF file to the ADrive 'cloud' here (11.8MBs). It may be of some use to you in tracking down locations using just the drainage channels. I'll send you the password for the download link in a PM. Hope this helps Hans and thanks again for all you efforts with this sortie. Regards, Pat
Hi All, 1st a Happy New Year to all of you.:exclamation: All the best in 2015! Few more finds: Frame 3026 The location is close to the x-ing between D913 and 'La Madeleine'. Is can be seen middle left of Frame 8034 In Frame 3026 a vehicle can be seen inbounds. Frame 3027 The '2/3 of a Neptune's fork' is below the 4th bend of the 'La Grand Dune' road, the bends counted starting from D67. It can be seen very nicely in Frame 8035 or in Frame 8022 Hans
