Thanks Sean, I cannot see your screenshot from my work PC either...and, somebody in here has used up the canteen monthly WIFI allowance of 30GBs, so my tablet is also useless. How does it look to you? Thanks, Pat
Thanks Sean Shows up nicely on my unlimited home Broadband !! Thanks for that - all we need is an answer as to whether it was Mustangs or P.47's, hopefully our US friends can find the answer to that side of the equation. Allan
Now sitting in our local Argos using their wi-fi, seeing clearly the screenshot, but screen on my phone is too small to see if correct location, wouldn't have thought Sean would give us anything else Hopefully I am giving you the correct answer to your question as I have to take my glasses off to read the screen
Hi Guys, apologies for a late replay. I checked with the IGN cover 1946 the location and agree with Pat that unfortunately the Amfreville-sur-Iton is not the location of the BP 1891.01 train visible here at 38 secs. For comparison a detail from the IGN Cover 1946 showing the single lane track.
Hi Guys, I did a pano from stills from F/O E L Decker, LT E P Lee and LT E A Kovacs. It looks like a sloped valley looking from the direction of the attack. [hr] Here is another scene which I could stitch together. Stills from LT J Wadlow (359 SQDN, 356 F.G.) from time range 3:01 to 3:27.
Hi Hans, What do you think of this new location here...I like this one a lot If I am correct, the train is traveling SE towards the hamlet of Cocheral on the river Eure and comes to a stop under fire at approximately where the track passes the dark post war pond in the above Google Maps link. Screenshots to follow... Regards, Pat
OK, here is what I see... First, IGN cover from 1947, with the approximate train position indicated by the red arrow: Next, a very different landscape today, with the only distinctive feature being 'D', a possible small railway siding in 1944. The large ponds are all post war: And now three screenshots from the gun cameras of the attacking P-51s: And finally, a finder chart showing the location on the River Eure, north east of Evreux: I think we have it this time Regards, Pat
Hi Pat, fantastic find. Without any doubt this is the location of the train attack. Additionally between your 'D' and 'E' mark is a small street with a slight bend. Same bend can be seen at 120 sec: Chances are there that we can find in this greater area the other scenes from 361SQDN. Here is the pano from stills starting from 150 sec to 156 sec from Capt. D B Clayton
Hi Pat, Guys, I think I have the location with the silo next to the river. Will update later. Here is the link to Goople Maps: link Here the IGN cover from 1945. It is close the the Seine crossing by Courcelles-sur-Seine. Will update later with details.
Hi Pat, Guys, more details. At 150 sec one can see house in 2 paired lines. Top line with 5 of them. With better resolution at 152sec. Also the long building alongside the railways and the 2 houses with a round-shaped roof. All can be seen in the high res picture from the last post. Here is the scene in perspective in an IGN cover from 1946. I think both locations are shown as dots on the map from post #18 from this thread.
Great finds Hans, Looks like the intention is to shut down the German rail traffic to Normandy from this area. I concur with you; the other scenes cannot be far away Regards, Pat
Hi Guys, 1stly - having trouble with posting stuff. Seems I am limited in number of lines or something else. Anyways more updates. Wanted to to share latest finding. 1 location identified - the railway yard from Orleans. I put together a pano around the 62SQDN from 56FG with respect to strafing railway installations. The scene is showing 10 to 20 tracks of a bigger railway yard, the run is going over them and than showing another isolated, single or dual track taking off from the yard. And finally fields and a single house. The stills are from F/O Vitale. F/O Vitale: 5:12 - 5:17. I made this pano from the stills. What finally helped in locating the scene is that the tracks seem to be electrified. In Fold3 is a map showing railway line throughout France and Western Germany. 2 line are shown to be electrified. Paris - Le Mans and Paris - Tours. [hr] In Fold3 is a map showing railway line throughout France and Western Germany. 2 line are shown to be electrified. Paris - Le Mans and Paris - Tours: Map. Another source confirms that. The private archive about news articles has one from August 1946 about electrification: article [hr] Finally here a portion from the Orleans yard which was the target of F/O Vitale. The AoI is bottom center. Here a close up. . The runs starts with the house on the left, goes over the tracks and end the small house aside the the lane. [hr] Same picture with arrows indicating start and end of the run. In the middle the arrow indicates a ditch witch can be seen as well in the still 5:13 under the track leading away from the main yard.

Great work Hans once again. Apologies for the posting problems you are experiencing. I am now also having issues posting more than a few lines, which is strange as the maximum number of characters allowed per post remains unchanged at 65535...which should be more than enough for any post. I need to check the settings further to see if anything has changed  Regards, Pat
