While at NARA I found a couple of German armor shots near SME. I think these have been seen before, but thought I'd put them up just in case. Indeed not new, but I appreciate you taking the time to post them here. These two vehicles are the two StuG knocked out on 7 June at Sainte-Mere-Eglise. They belonged to 2./Pz.Jg.Abt.243 (2nd company of the antitank battalion of the 243.Inf.Div.). Officially this company was actually known as a battalion, but this was little more than a silly renaming effort of this kind of companies. It was again cancelled later in 1944. Many books claim these belonged the antitank battalion of the 709.Inf.Div. but that is the result of poor research. The division never had any assault guns.
Hi Guys, Thanks for posting these exceptionally good quality copies Dale. I often wonder what is causing the smoke at the northern most of the two wrecks (the one put out of action by Pvt. John E. Atchley). When viewing the the CP footage here, the smoke seems to be coming not from the wreck, but from in or over the hedgerow. Phils photo from page 192/3 of 'Four Stars of Valor' shows this wreck from behind, with perhaps a hint that the smoke is coming from the drainage ditch at the road side of the hedgerow: Just one of those things which keeps me awake at night Regards, Pat
