    Hi List,

At the risk of repeating myself, I have to state again that the reconnaissance photograph TARA_ACIU_US7GR_1857_8010 truly is a remarkable image – not just from an aesthetics viewpoint but also for its seemingly inexhaustible ability to function as a finder chart for other narrow angle aerials.

Recently, I have been attempting to find frames 127-129 inclusive from the British Pathe resupply mission footage, located here. Many hours with Google Earth proved fruitless until, yet once again, frame 8010 has delivered me from the brink of insanity. The three frames 127-129 are:

At first glance, you might assume that because of the wide angle view, these frames would be relatively easy to find – no so; at least not for me.:)

Here again is a downsized version of TARA_ACIU_US7GR_1857_8010 shot on the 12th June:

The two ‘islands’ of brush, presumably with ponds in their centres, lettered ‘A’ and ‘B’ eventually led me to the location. Note also the square orchard and the farm house and outbuildings for further ties. This three second sequence from the footage, as appears to be the case in other sequences, is being shot from the port side cargo door and therefore, if I am not mistaken, the aircraft is making a left turn westwards from a northerly course – or is it too late in the night to be attempting to figure this out

Today, the pond(?) at ‘A’ is just about visible while the one at ‘B’ in the field to the east appears to have been removed:

There is a C-47 crash site also visible in the sequence from the footage but I am refraining from indicating its position in order to protect the site.

    Regards,

    Pat

This thread was originally created on the old BB Forum and I have been guilty of leaving it behind while working on other stuff, most especially since all the work has been completed in locating the scenes!

    So, moving on...

The 30 seconds of footage between time marks 00:47 and 01:17 show the C-47s dropping parachute containers over the A-6 La Londe ALG. We have already looked at some excellent still photos over the runway in post #16 of the 'ALG A6 - Beuzeville au Plain (La Londe)' thread, so I'll confine my screenshots to the opening scenes as the aircraft approach the airstrip from the eastern end.

Below are GE screenshots showing the location of the opening scenes:

The blue dashed line is the boundary of the working strip, though associated activities and stores took in a larger number of fields than this. The red rectangle is zoomed to below:

The following six stills from the BP footage comprise the run over the A-6 ALG, east to west:

I have inserted some observation notes on the stills as the run proceeds towards the western end of the strip. The aircraft then bank to the south just before reaching Sainte Mere Eglise.

    To continue...

The footage is not all shown in the order in which the re-supply mission was flown, in part I think because at least two photographers appear to be filming from different aircraft. In addition, some scenes are extremely short in duration and there are consequently no 'official' BP stills available. The next scene is a case in point and I had to manufacture my own still in order to find the location shown in this one segment scene between 01:18 and 01:19:
The location is just east of Ecoqueneauville with the view looking southwest toward the hamlet. IGN cover from 1947 shows the fields to best effect:
The 'squashed' yellow rectangle above indicates the aircraft is again banking onto a new course now heading eastward towards Utah Beach.

    I've just noticed something...

...if you track NE from the scene in the post above toward Turqueville, you pass directly over the well know aerial still photo of the Waco cluster to the SW of the hamlet:
This glider cluster is not in the footage, but the next immediate scene is just on the other side of Turqueville:
I have shown the location of frame #78 below in black on the GE screenshot and the location of the glider cluster still photo in yellow:
Therefore the bottom two fields in the scene from the footage in post #3 above, showing time mark 01min18sec, are the same two fields in the bottom of the glider cluster still photo!

I wonder is this photo a print from the footage? If it is, there must be other footage segments which are not included in the BP film #1965.05.

    More follows...

    Pat
