Hello All, I have just completed a google map of the known glider landing locations of 341 Waco and Horsa gliders. You can see the map here: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209661709708940440557.0004f7f38df837239fb09&msa=0 The map has 2 pages to it as you scroll down the column on the left. The sources for the map are the mostly the NCAP aerial photos, Fold3.com, "Looking Down on War" by Col Roy Stanley II, and our own forum discussions. In most cases I posted the first aerial in which a glider was seen and placed that information into the icon text box for researchers. Pat Curran and I hope to identify as many of the gliders as we can. Please share your feedback on the map and any way in which we can improve on it or identify gliders. I think we may even be able to add photos of the gliders as well. I Will have to rely on Pat for much of that. Please let me know your thoughts and if you know of some missed gliders or aerial photos available as a source please post them or e-mail me. I can already think of another fold3 aerial that has 5 waco's that I need Pat to identify the location for me for mapping. John
John, Great job with the map. I realize that putting it together was no easy task. I’m sure the “glider-focused” members of the Forum especially appreciate your efforts and will put the map to good use. Any thoughts yet on the process and associated rules with assigning possible identities to specific gliders? A few IT questions that you or Pat are probably already working on. Will it be possible to… - Put identity/link information in the data blocks that pop-up for each glider in the Google map? - Color-code the individual gliders? - Outline the approximate limits of the different landing zones? Looking forward to assist as this effort progresses. Again, thanks. R/Kevin
Excellent Job John! I am assuming you are referring to the Turqueville Waco cluster... ...which is located here, just outside the village to the south west: Different location and different 'A' and 'B' as used above - the aerial re-supply mission to La Londe A-6 footage, commencing at time mark 04:08 at this British Pathe location, shows a Horsa in the northern corner of field 'B' across the laneway from the eastern end of the strip - see frame below: You can see the glider as a dot on NCAP_ACIU_US7GR_1857_8010 - let me know if you have trouble plotting it. Regards, Pat
Good Morning Pat, Yes you got it, that is the cluster of waco gliders I was referring to! I will plot them in this morning and I don't think I will have a problem with the British Pathe Horsa either. Kevin and Sean, Pat and I had some discussions on the map and we can even put photos into the data blocks. Google does have a tutorial on how that is done by using the rich text link, however you need something like photobucket and/or image reducing tools that I had not even tried to figure out. That is where I hope Pat will be able to do his magic We can also color code the individual gliders we identify as a group, but we would like suggestions on the color codes. I also had thought of creating a bordering line designating the different landing zones, but I have not seen a larger scale map or drawing showing a more accurate border to these zones. Please keep your ideas coming and thank you all for the compliments on the map. Respectfully, John Addition... the Turqueville wacos and the British Pathe horsa wave been added. I think that brings the total up to 349 mapped gliders. does anybody know how many gliders there were? I bet Patrick Elie does Pat, I also found glider B 15 (Port wing bent forward). Check the very top of the fold3 Keystone photo. John
Wow, John! That is some good work. Thank you very much for putting it together. No doubt the map will be a valuable and helpful tool for those of us searching to identify particular gliders. Charles
Hi John, From Philippe Esvelin's table on page 135 of 'Forgotten Wings', I get a total of 462 combined Horsa and Waco gliders: I know a small number never got across the Channel for various reasons and we have the 8 'far flung' Wacos on the western Cotentin plus T/Sgt Shimko's 'far flung' Waco somewhere north of Caen. There is also the missing Waco down south of Carentan in the marshes. Therefore there must be in the region of another hundred to be plotted around the designated LZs. I assume most of these must be wrecks in the hedgerows. Regards, Pat
Great project guys. If time permits I will check if I can add info. And I need to check things first on the computer, instead of phone. Hans www.airbornetroopcarrier.com
Hi Guys, I have had some feedback on the map, but I would like to get more. One thing I am kind of dissapointed about is that of the 349 gliders, I can only map or plot 200 gliders to a page before the map spreads out to a second page. That means because I mapped in sequence of aerials by date, some gliders you would expect to see in a hedgerow may not appear on the map until page two because of the later date of the aerial or when I received the information. This may make researching an area a bit more difficult. What I am considering doing is creating 3 different maps. one covering The Sainte mere Eglise area and LZ O. one covering the area south of Sainte mere Eglise and LZ W. one covering the Hiesville / vierville area and LZ E. This would not overcrowd any given map, and allow for all gliders in an area to appear on the map. Any thoughts? here is the map currently: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209661709708940440557.0004f7f38df837239fb09&msa=0 John
Hi John, I tried using the solution given on the Google Forum here by user 'ehg' and it resulted in your map opening in Google Earth. Not sure all your markers are there, but I think they are. Try it yourself and see. The only problem is that the user must have Google Earth installed on their PC but that is not a big issue. Regards, Pat
Hi John, Can you check if all your markers appear below? <table width="800" border="0" align="center"> <tr> <td><iframe width="799" height="700" frameborder="0" scrolling="No" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209661709708940440557.0004f7f38df837239fb09&msa=0&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=49.402641,-1.310088&spn=0.100145,0.154217&output=embed"></iframe><br /></td> </tr> </table> Below is the code I used to embed the map - just copy and paste it to produce a copy within your posts if required. Code: <table width="800" border="0" align="center"> <tr> <td><iframe width="799" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="No" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209661709708940440557.0004f7f38df837239fb09&msa=0&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=49.402641,-1.310088&spn=0.100145,0.154217&output=embed"></iframe><br /></td> </tr> </table> Regards, Pat
Hi John. Looks to me like the Pond Field is fully populated on above Map; 6 Horsas and 1 Waco. Are you seeing the same on the Map I embedded above? Regards, Pat Edit: The screenshot below is what I see on the embedded map when zoomed to the Pond Field: Charles, 'Edna' is circled yellow FYI. Pat
Hi Pat, This is strange because in your image directly above I can see all the gliders, but in the map above that I can only see the Waco. Even when I zoom in to the level of image in your last post. I have no idea why... I wonder how everyone else sees the pond field John
John, Pat and all, I can see it as per Pat, ie all the gliders both on Pat's embedded map and from the link on the first page. Cheers, Sean
Thanks Sean, John, have you tried clearing your browser's cache? See here for instructions pertaining to the more common browsers. Regards, Pat
Hi Pat and Sean, I just got to work and on my work computer I can see it as you all do. I will have to clear my browser history when I get home after work. Thank you for your help ! John
Good John, When you have it tweaked to your satisfaction, what say you to giving it it's own home under the 'Research Map' tab on the top menu. My old demo has been taken down so the slot is free. Regards, Pat
