I don't know if this is the appropriate area to post this inquiry, but it is the closest I could find. I am having difficulty inserting photos into replies within threads and am wondering if someone can suggest what I might be doing incorrectly, or if I need a particular software program. What I have been doing is as follows: I open a "new reply" field, type in whatever comments I want to make and then click on "new attachment". I "browse" the location from which I want to select a photo, click on the one I want, and see that it's identifying info is entered into the new attachment box. I select "add attachment". I have then usually "previewed" the post, put the cursor where I want the photo to appear and then select "insert into post". At that point a small square appears near the location of the cursor, with a black center with an "x". Clicking on that generates the following message: "The specified thread does not exist." No photo opens. Sometimes the small square is colored, but the resulting message is the same. I have tried sending NCAP photos as well as some from other origins; same result. My system is not especially sophisticated, basically Windows 7 with the standard programs. However, I usually don't have any problem moving photos around or sending them off by email or in letters, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Charles
RE: Inserting photos into posts I would suggest finding an online photosharing site like Photobucket and set up an account. You can then post the link from the site into the thread.
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Charles, As Dale suggests, the first thing you need is a web storage area. There are several out there which offer free, albeit limited, storage. Let me know if you need help selecting one. The layout of the Forum pages here means that the image which you want to appear within your post (I assume that's what you seek to achieve), should not be more than 900 pixels wide. I limit all my 'in post' images to 850 pixels wide. This prevents spilling over of the page format like we see with some of Bruno's images on the 'My Longest Night' by Genevieve Duboscq thread here. (If it's OK with you Bruno, I will take these down and resize them to 850 pixels wide.) To resize any image you need an image editing program. Again, there are several out there, including the free and excellent GIMP. When you have your image thus resized (if too wide) and uploaded to your storage area, you can then insert it into your post by means of the button indicated by the red arrow below: Below is a screenshot of the input box which results when the red arrow button is clicked: If you want the image to appear centred (my personal preference), just highlight all the resulting code tags and file name as I have done below and click the centre button circled red: . You will note that I am shying away from answering you direct question regarding image attachments. The reason is that this method takes up space on my web server - use the method by all means if you are stuck, but its better for me if the image is hosted elsewhere. Francois, our IT Administrator, has warned me about the current low level of available space allocated by my ISP. As an addon; in the old days of web browsers, some of them objected when the name of an image file contained spaces and/or uppercase letters, for example like HOW TO post images 03.png. Browsers nowadays are more forgiving but its still considered good practice to use the underscore character to fill spaces and to only use lowercase letters such as how_to_post_images_03.png. This has probably caused more questions that it has answered so I'll stop for now and see where you are at Charles. Keep the questions coming. Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Thank you both for the advice. I realize that you are quite busy handling the various aspects of this website and I do appreciate your prompt responses. I will try to take it from here and likely go with Photobucket for a storage place. I really don't want to unnecessarily use space on your ISP. If I don't still have an image editing program (I know I've done some resizing in the past.) I'll take a look at GIMP. Thanks again, Charles
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Charles, Do please come back if you get stuck and we will try to resolve any outstanding issues. Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Ok, I am making progress for sure, but I'm running into a peculiar result. I established Photobucket and loaded up some random pictures just for testing purposes. I then opened up a "New Reply" box on the website. I entered some text as usual, skipped a few lines and then copied and pasted the URL for the picture I wanted to display, using the button identified by the red arrow in your instructions. I also set it to center the picture. Then, when I selected "Preview Post", two things came up. First was the post as I intended it to be: text and the photo centered as I requested. Then, below this was the whole post over again, but with only the text and the written URL info, no picture. I did not actually "post" the reply to see what would happen then. So, I will do that now and see if the "second post" happens or not. Here is a sample photo: [hr] Ok, it appears to have posted as I wanted, without the extra copy. Thanks again for the help. I'll continue to try to refine my skills a bit here, but for now I can at least do something. Charles
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Charles, Glad to see you are making headway. I should have mentioned that there is a help page available from the link underneath the word '...Battlefields...' in the Forum title. A good example page showing how to use the 'MyCode' tags is held therein at this location. Note that these tags can be produced in your posts by either using the buttons at the top or they can be 'hard coded' into the body of your post - in other words, just typed in!. Be sure to close a tag though or it will not work. This Forum is created using software called 'MyBB' and I choose it because it is free and open source (anyone can add to, or work with, the code). Consequently there is a huge community of MyBB users and the creators of the software have a great support site - for example, click here for a more comprehensive list of all the 'MyCode' tags with examples. Below is a screenshot of this post as it was created showing the use of some 'MyCode' tags. Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Just an addition... I notice a vertical line following the comma following the word 'Regards' in my screenshot above. This is the cursor which was blinking at that location when I took the screenshot; it's nothing to do with 'MyCode' tags in case readers spot it. Mentioning screen capture programs, the one I use and love is 'Snagit' produced by TechSmith. I use it to capture portions of my screen and then mark them up for posting with labels, arrows etc. Couldn't live without 'Snagit' Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Just take it in steps Charles, We are always here to help if you hit a hard nut to crack Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts I recently noticed something odd, at least to me, on post #61, of my Elmira Horsa Glider thread, dated 4/28/14 (page 7). In that post I had inserted three photos. However, the second two of these pictures are no longer there. In their place is a message, apparently from Photobucket, saying "This person removed or deleted this image." As far as I know I did not remove the images from the forum, and don't think I could if I had wanted to. Anyway, any idea how the pictures could have been removed? One thought: if I had removed them from Photobucket, would that have resulted in them being taken off of the forum post? I could have done that on a temporary basis while trying to rearrange some of the pictures. Can the pictures be replaced? Sorry for the problem. Charles
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Charles, For whatever reason, the problem is with Photobucket, not the Forum here. I tried copying and pasting the address to you first missing image... http://s63.photobucket.com/user/ddayhorsa/media/D-Day%20Glider%20landings/Capture_zps407d94c2.jpg.html ...into a new tab in Firefox and it brought me to your Photobucket page but the same missing link message is there. There are nine previews underneath showing extracts from reconnaissance photos, so your account must be OK - the previews are enlarging when clicked. Did you save copies of the two missing images on your own computer? If so, send them to me by email and I'll put them up on my server and re-connect the broken links. Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Pat, thanks for the help here. I went to the email feature on the forum website but didn't see an option to add an attachment. So, I am attaching the two pictures here, in the order in which they should appear in my post #61. Let me know if this won't work. Thanks again, Charles Note: for some reason the first picture comes up with a size of 1024/580, even though I have resized it any number of times to 800/455. When I look at "properties" on this pic on Photobucket, it shows up as 800/455, but not when I attach it to the post. ?? [/URL][/img] [/URL][/img]
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Charles, I have re-connected the new links on your original post #61. Can you take a look and see if everything is as it should be? BTW, you seem to be creating both [/color] and [color=#FF0000][url][/color] tags for your images; is there a reason why you need the user to go back to the Photobucket page where the image rests if they click the image here on the Forum? If not, you don't need the [color=#FF0000][url][/color] tag. To grab the Photobucket link for just the image (not the web page it rests on) in order to insert in the Forum, proceed thus: Go to the Photobucket web page where your image rests and click the link button, circled red on the screenshot below: [CENTER][img]http://www.normandy.whitebeamimages.ie/gliders/charles_ddayhorsa/photo_bucket_link_button.png[/CENTER] When you click the link button, a popup appears offering several different types of linkage to the image. Left click the 'Direct' link once (anywhere inside red rectangle)... ...and for an instant, you will see the word 'Copied' on a yellow background... Now, go to your Forum post and press Ctrl+V to insert the address location of the image in between the opening image tags. Job done Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Thanks for replacing the two images, Pat, and for the instructions for using the Photobook source. The images look just fine. As for the reason I was inserting the URL tags, it is just that I thought it was what I needed to do in order to place the images. Nothing more complicated than that. Since I have no reason to send someone to the Photobucket page, I won't be doing that any longer, and will just use the "Direct" linkage option. Sometimes learning is a slow process. Charles
RE: Inserting photos into posts No problem Charles, It's just a matter of practice with this stuff and after a while you do it without thinking Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Anybody having problems transferring images from Photobucket to the Forum? I am doing what I have always done, but now I cannot get the URL image code to "copy" to the Forum. When I click on the "direct" link in Photobucket, the URL flashes yellow for about one second, saying "copied". But when I then go to the Forum where I am asked to copy the URL to that location nothing happens. The only thing in the box for the URL is http. There is nothing there to "OK" for copying. If no one else is having problems, then it may be my computer. Charles
RE: Inserting photos into posts When it highlights and says copied link I always do CNTL-C to make sure I have a copy before I go and paste.
RE: Inserting photos into posts Hi Charles, Are you pressing Ctrl+V when you see the popup below? Regards, Pat
RE: Inserting photos into posts Ok, thanks to both of you. It seems to work now. I just don't remember doing that "Ctrl" step before. Must be getting old. Charles
